Description

This monograph presents a perspective on the art of Bhupen Khakhar (b.1934). One of the most significant Indian artists of this century, Khakhar came to art only in his thirties. His work from the mid-1970s through the 1980s exposed a representation of the world that, starting with the ‘insignificant’ and the ‘different’, went on to encompass a broad ‘panorama and plenitude’. Khakhar’s work from the beginning of the 1980s onwards has been marked by an overt concern with homosexuality.

Timothy Hyman is a British figurative painter, art writer and curator. He first met Bhupen Khakhar in 1976. He was a visiting professor at Baroda in 1981 and 1983. Trained at The Slade School of Fine Art, London, his work is in many British public collections (including the Arts Council, the British Museum, the Contemporary Art Society, the Museum of London, and the Government Art Collection). He has exhibited widely in Britain, as well as in Bombay and Ahmedabad.

Praise

“This is a perceptive book. It is smoothly written and carefully thought out. It is satisfying as biography and as critique.”
