Through Mehta's lens the ordinary takes on a metaphysical timbre. Rocks become sculpture. A stray strand of grass becomes a maze, drawing us towards its vortex. A wave returning to the sea leaves an imprint that stirs memories of the first life on earth.
Here Mehta's photographs of the sea, of rocks and trees come together with Tagore's words. Famed photo-critic Judith Mara Gutman writes an incisive introduction analyzing Mehta's style and scope.
Of Mehta's photography, the famed photo critic Judith Mara Gutman says "Mehta is in the tradition of the 19th century Indian photography which overhauled Western traditional understanding of pictorial space and the camera's use — to create a system of imagery that was related to Indian miniature painting and Indian conceptual systems': Today, with a long career in advertising and photography, Mehta is perhaps India's most highly lauded photographer. With two books to his credit, Himalaya — Encounters with Eternity and Coasts of India, his work has been published in newspapers, magazines and photojournals the world over. He has to his credit several solo and group exhibitions.
Mehta now lives in the tiny coastal village of Tithal, Gujarat.
